LAKE COUNTY, IL — Lake County is expanding its sustainability efforts with a new program aimed at helping local governments adopt environmentally friendly policies and practices.

County officials said the initiative will make it easier for communities to take meaningful steps toward sustainability, with potential benefits for residents including cleaner neighborhoods, improved parks and open spaces, more efficient resource use and long-term cost savings, according to the news release.

A central component of the program is the newly released Sustainable Model Ordinance Inventory, which compiles more than 20 years of Lake County ordinances and best practices. Organized by topics such as energy, food systems and waste, the inventory is intended to help local governments tailor policies to meet their specific needs, according to a news release.

Lake County will also work directly with municipalities and other partners to assess interest in adopting future sustainability measures, offering hands-on support throughout the process, according to Lake County officials.

Officials said the program aligns with the county’s strategic plan, which prioritizes environmental sustainability and aims to create cleaner, more resilient communities, according to a news release.
