NORTH CHICAGO, IL — A Lake County judge sentenced 25-year-old Jeremiah Perry to 30 years in prison for his role in the 2021 murder and dismemberment of his 6-year-old brother, Damari Perry, in North Chicago.
Prosecutors said Damari died after being forced into a prolonged cold shower as punishment, and family members later burned and abandoned his body in Gary before falsely reporting him missing, according to the Lake & McHenry County Scanner.
Jeremiah Perry was originally charged with first-degree murder, dismembering a human body, aggravated battery of a child, aggravated domestic battery, concealing a homicidal death, child endangerment, abuse of a corpse and obstructing justice in connection with the fatal abuse of his brother, according to the article. Last week, court records show he entered into a negotiated plea deal with the Lake County to one count of dismembering a human body, a Class X felony, in exchange for a 30-year prison sentence.
The charges stem from the Dec. 30, 2021, murder of his younger brother, Damari.
According to prosecutors, the boy was forced to stand in a cold shower as a form of punishment until he began vomiting and lost consciousness. Neither his mother nor his siblings sought medical attention.
Instead, they concocted what prosecutors described as a "completely false" narrative that Damari Perry had gone missing after he was brought to a party in the Skokie area with an older sister and a mysterious figure known as "Chaos" or "Wacko."
His family reported him missing on Jan. 5, 2022, claiming that he had last been seen the day before. Perry's body was found on Jan. 7, 2022, in an abandoned home in Northwest Indiana
In April 2025, a Lake County judge sentenced Jannie Perry to the maximum 45 years in prison for the murder of her son. Prosecutors presented evidence showing Damari suffered ongoing neglect and mistreatment, including text messages in which Perry allegedly expressed resentment toward him, according to Fox 32.
Perry was taken into Illinois Department of Children and Family Services custody shortly after his 2015 birth, joining four older siblings in foster care, according to a DCFS spokesperson.
But in 2017, a judge ordered that that Perry and the other children be returned to the custody of their mother, 38-year-old Jannie Perry.
In May 2021, DCFS also looked into an allegation that Damari Perry's mother abused or neglected him. That probe closed the next month and determined the allegation to be unfounded, according to department spokesperson Bill McCaffery.
