Man Arrested In Waukegan Car Show Shooting, Charged With Attempted Murder

Police say the shooting was a targeted attack at the downtown festival.

WAUKGEAN, IL — A Harvey man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after authorities say he shot a man during the Scoop Waukegan Car Show and Festival in downtown Waukegan.

The shooting happened around 7 p.m. Saturday, July 11, near 20 S. Genesee St., on the south side of a building next to a private parking lot, according to a Waukegan Police Department press release.

On Tuesday, investigators obtained an arrest warrant charging Willie J. White, 36, of Harvey, with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm, both Class X felonies.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m., Waukegan police, assisted by the Zion Police Department, arrested White without incident. Investigators also recovered a firearm during the arrest.

The shooting victim, a man in his late 30s, was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital, where he remains in stable condition. Investigators said the shooting stemmed from a targeted altercation between the victim and the suspect while both were attending the festival.

No other people were involved, police said.

Police said the large law enforcement presence already assigned to the event allowed officers to quickly secure the scene, provide medical aid and protect festival attendees. The event ended early so investigators could process the scene.

White is being held pending his first court appearance, and an investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
