Lake Co. Man Dies After E-Scooter Crash On Route 41 In Gurnee

Domingo Ocampo, 60, was riding along the shoulder when a wheel broke loose from a trailer and struck him, authorities said.

GURNEE, IL — A 60-year-old Park City man died after a trailer wheel broke loose from a vehicle and struck him while he was riding an electric scooter along Route 41 in Gurnee, authorities said.

The crash happened around 5:25 p.m. on July 27 on northbound Route 41 near the Grand Avenue exit, according to the Gurnee Police Department. A preliminary investigation shows Domingo Ocampo was riding his e-scooter north along the shoulder of Route 41 while a Ford F-450 towing a trailer was also traveling north on the highway.

Two wheels broke loose from the trailer, with one striking Ocampo, police said. He was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The Lake County Coroner's Office was notified Saturday that Ocampo had died in the intensive care unit despite medical treatment, according to the coroner's office.

Ocampo died from complications of blunt-force head injuries sustained in the crash, according to the preliminary coroner's investigation.

The crash remains under investigation by the Gurnee Police Department and the Major Crash Assistance Team.
