Bystanders Save Man From Submerged Car In Zion Pond

A man escaped without injury thanks to the assistance of bystanders after he drove his car into a pond in Zion, authorities said.

The Zion Fire-Rescue Department and Winthrop Harbor Fire Department responded around 3:35 p.m. Saturday to Kenosha Road and Van Court in unincorporated Zion for a report of a water rescue.

Zion Fire-Rescue Department Battalion Chief Justin Stried said that a man driving a sedan swerved to avoid another vehicle and lost control of his car, causing him to drive into a small pond on the northwest corner of the intersection.

The sedan was partially submerged in water and the man called 911 while still inside the car. Bystanders were able to assist the man out before firefighters arrived.

The man was not injured and evaluated by paramedics at the scene. He declined medical transport to the hospital, Stried said.

Firefighters helped secure the vehicle and Lake County Towing removed it without incident.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the scene. A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office could not immediately be reached for comment Saturday evening. It is unknown if any citations were issued.
