Being overweight is just as much a health risk for dogs as it is their owners. With this in mind, The Canine Center in Lake Villa is sponsoring a three month program to educate owners about how to make their dog healthier.
“Our goal is to have pets that are happier and healthier, and can play more,” said Christina Barkus, DVM.
“It is clear that we are not contributing positively to our dog's health when we allow them to become overweight," say the experts at PetEducation.com. "The next time those big brown eyes say, 'Can I please have a treat,' think very carefully first. In most cases, your answer should be 'No, and I'm doing this for your own good,' and it will be absolutely true.”

Stay posted on Patch as we follow the progress of the families and their pets in the program. Diet and exercise are key, and just like the rest of us, dog owners will most likely have to change their behaviors to help their dogs. Here are some statistics to ‘chew” on:
- 35 percent of the total pet population is overweight
- Overweight pets are at risk for heart disease, diabetes and arthritis
- One extra pound on a Chihuahua is equal to 38 pounds on an average woman
- One ounce of cheese for a 20-pound dog is equal to a human eating 1-1/2 hamburgers
The “Hefty Hounds” program is scheduled to start in early March and will last for three months. The veterinary hospital is looking for 10-12 dogs to participate in this program.
