Coroner IDs Boy, 14, Who Drowned At Illinois Beach State Park

The body of the 14-year-old boy from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was found in Lake Michigan Friday morning, authorities said.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — The Lake County Coroner's Office has identified a 14-year-old boy whose body was recovered from Lake Michigan Friday morning as Kyle Williams, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A search for Williams first started on Tuesday evening after a beach goer at Illinois Beach State Park saw the 14-year-old boy go under water and never resurface, according to a news release from the coroner's office. Search and rescue teams were called to the state park, at 1 Lake Front Drive, to try and locate the teen.

On Friday, his body was recovered in the general area of north beach, according to the coroner's office. Preliminary results from an autopsy indicate Williams' death is consistent with drowning.

Drownings at Illinois Beach State Park have become fairly common in recent years. In June, Espinoza Contreras, 20, of Waukegan, died while swimming in Lake Michigan at Illinois Beach State Park.

Following the most recent drowning, the coroner's office is warning Lake Michigan beach goers to be wary of of the key dangers that come with swimming there, including: rip currents, powerful currents of water that are difficult to detect and structural currents, which are strong flows of water near piers, jetties and break walls that can pull swimmers underwater and potentially trap them against structures.
