District 70 Schools Raise Over $6000 for Hurricane Victims

The money raised will go to benefit victims of Hurricanes Harvey in Texas and Irma in Florida.

From Libertyville District 70: Libertyville School District 70 schools raised more than $6,000 to help victims of Hurricanes Harvey in Texas and Irma in Florida within a month. Collection boxes were placed in all five schools, as well as in the administrative office to collect monies and gift cards for District 70’s Character Counts! Committee’s “Helping in Hurricane Harvey’s and Irma’s Wake.”

Almost half of the funds came in gift cards of up to $25 to Amazon, Best Buy, Home Depot, Lowes, Target and Wal-Mart, all stores located in the devastated Texas and Florida regions. When the fundraiser ended on Monday, Oct. 2, District 70 had collected $3,085 in gift cards and $2,633 in cash donations, said Rockland teacher and Character Counts! Committee member Dale List. But the $5,718 total has grown to more than $6,000 as most checks and gift cards were submitted throughout the week. List will have a final count this weekend after turning the cash into gift cards.

The Character Counts! Committee already has selected recipients and is expected to work on connecting the recipients with the donations next week. “Our goal is to provide some relief to the victims of the devastating hurricanes as they work to reestablish themselves.”
