Description: Ben Helmke will speak on the spiritual issues and questions raised by Atul Gawande’s recent best-selling book Being Mortal, which explores how we can better live with an age-related frailty, serious illness, and approaching death.

About the Speaker: Ben Helmke describes himself as a “cradle roll Presbyterian” with a strong influence for the Mo. Synod Lutheran Church. Originally a wheat farmer in Kansas, he served as Choir Director and Organist of his home church in Pratt, Kansas. He was ordained as a Presbyterian Minister in 1960, and in 1962, began his service as Minister of the Presbyterian church in Homer, Michigan. He later earned an MSW at the University of Michigan, and worked many years in community mental health, organizing a family treatment center in Taylor, Michigan.
