Coroner IDs Inmate Found Dead At Lake Co. Jail

The 61-year-old man was taken into custody on Nov. 16 on grooming and violation of sex offender registry charges.

LAKE COUNTY, IL — The Lake County Coroner's Office has identified a 61-year-old inmate found dead in his cell as Bruce Chamberlin of Mundelein.

Preliminary results from an autopsy show Chamberlin died of natural causes, according to the coroner's office. Chamberlin has been behind bars for less than a month on grooming and violation of a sex offender registry charges.

Lake County Jail officers found Chamberlin unresponsive in his cell at about 8:15 p.m. Monday, according to authorities.

Officers began administering first-aid and used an automated external defibrillator on the man. Correctional officers determined he was not breathing and performed CPR on him until paramedics arrived, police said.

Chamberlin was taken to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan where he was pronounced deceased. There was no visible signs of any trauma to Chamberlin's body and he did not have a roommate.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force is investigating the death, which is a standard practice in deaths involving inmates.
