Lake Co. Man Among 2 College Cyclists Killed In Tennessee Crash
Haylan Engdahl, a Milligan University sophomore, was killed Wednesday when a vehicle struck a group of cyclists during a training ride.
WINTHROP HARBOR, IL — A Lake County man was among two Milligan University students killed Wednesday when a vehicle struck a group of 11 cyclists during a training ride in northeastern Tennessee, according to the Associated Press.
Haylan Engdahl, of Winthrop Harbor, was killed along with fellow sophomore and college cyclist Brayden Rogers of Huntsville, Alabama, in the crash near Hampton, about 11 miles from the university's campus. Milligan University President Dr. Stephen Waers said in a message to the university community that the cyclists were on a training ride at about 8 a.m. when they were struck by a vehicle.
“We are profoundly shocked and saddened to share that members of our cycling team were in an accident involving a vehicle this morning while cycling in Hampton, TN,” according to a statement from Milligan “Sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers were killed in this accident.”

Seven other Milligan cyclists were being treated at Johnson City Medical Center, Waers said, while two others had been released from the hospital. AP reported Wednesday evening that four students were in critical condition, two remained hospitalized in stable condition and one had been discharged.
“There are no words to adequately describe this level of loss,” according to a statement from Milligan. “Our prayers are with all those impacted by this tragedy. Please keep the Milligan community in your prayers.”

The driver of the car, Steve Finney, 69, of North Carolina man was arrested and faces two counts of reckless vehicular homicide and five counts of aggravated assault by vehicle with recklessness in connection with the fatal collision, according to AP.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
