Legal Group Threatens Lawsuit Over Transgender Student Room Assignments
The group alleges District 128 violated students' privacy rights during overnight trips.
LAKE COUNTY, IL — A legal advocacy group is considering a lawsuit against Community High School District 128 over policies involving transgender students and overnight school trips, according to Lake and McHenry County Scanner.
The Liberty Justice Center sent the district a demand letter Oct. 14, alleging female students had been required to share overnight accommodations with a transgender girl and raising concerns about student privacy and parental notification, according to the news report. Attorneys representing the district responded that its gender support guidelines and room assignment procedures comply with federal and Illinois law.
The district's attorneys said families concerned about room assignments can request alternative accommodations, including individual rooms, and that disclosing another student's transgender status without consent could violate privacy laws, the Lake & McHenry County Scanner is reporting.
