Libertyville Approves Grant To Address Flooding Woes
The grant would help pay for residents to switch to a sewer system meant to prevent flooding.

LIBERTYVILLE, IL – The Libertyville Village Board in recent weeks approved a sanitary sewer grant that would allow residents who were affected by recent flooding to install backup prevention equipment, according to the Libertyville Review. Residents will have until Oct. 31 to apply for the grant. In total, $200,000 in grants have been approved by the village.
The Libertyville Review reports:
Residents can be reimbursed for up to 50 percent, or a max of $5,000, of the cost to convert from a gravity-based sewer system to an overhead sewer system, according to the ordinance. The grant is retroactive for residents who already completed the work, while others moving forward need to provide proof of three different quotes from contractors.
“The way this is going to work, we are going to accept as many applications as are received in the month of October,” Village Trustee Peter Garrity said. “Those applications are going to be divided by $200,000. The bottom line is we could have 400 applications and on that basis, when you start spreading out the $200,000, it could be a fairly small reimbursement per household.”
Many older homes use a gravity-based sewer system, which can lead to waste getting back into homes, and the city is urging residents to switch to the updated and more commonly used overhead sanitary sewer system, according to the Liberttville Review.
