Libertyville Begins New "Places for Eating" Tax

The new tax will implement a one percent tax on food or drinks bought for immediate consumption at restaurants with a seating area.

The Mayor and Village Board announced today that they approved a "Places for Eating Tax." This tax will implement a one percent tax on the purchase of food and beverages for immediate consumption at any restaurant or store in Libertyville that provides a seating area.

For example, a food and beverage bill of $20 will have an additional tax of 20 cents. This tax is similar to taxes applied to dining purchases in various communities in the area.

The "Places for Eating Tax" will act as a new source of revenue for Libertyville and will have little impact on taxpayers.

The Village Board and Staff believe that additional revenue sources such as the "Places for Eating Tax" is necessary to maintain a balanced budget for the Village, especially while facing upcoming challenges like the expiration of the Libertyville TIF district, the continuing financial crisis in Illinois, and increasing pension obligations.
