Libertyville High Graduate Who Excelled in Academics Killed in Iowa Crash

Connor Robinson, 18, was killed Monday afternoon in a crash about 30 miles west of the Illinois-Iowa border.

A recent graduate of Libertyville High School who excelled academically was killed Monday in a two-vehicle crash in rural Iowa.

Connor Robinson, 18, was a freshman at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, and was attending the school on a four-year academic scholarship, according to the Daily Herald.

The accident occurred Monday afternoon when the car Robinson was driving crossed the centerline on Highway 30 near Calamus, Iowa, and collided with a semitrailer, the Des Moines Register reports. Calumus is located about 30 miles west of the Illinois-Iowa border and about 35 miles east of Mount Vernon, Iowa.

Robinson is a 2014 graduate of Libertyville High School where he served on the executive board of the Model United Nations Club, was an Illinois State Scholar, and was a member of the Science Olympiad team, the Interact student service club, Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering and the Latin clubs.

Robinson twice made it to the semifinals to appear on Jeopardy!, the Daily Herald reports. His father, Andy Robinson, served on Libertyville’s plan commission/zoning board of appeals, and the family had recently moved from Libertyville to Oceanside, Calif.

At Cornell College, Robinson was a member of Cornell College’s Performing Arts and Activities Council, which is a student-run programming board that provides a variety of entertainment options and activities for students.

“He brought enthusiastic support and comedic relief to every event, meeting, and family dinner that we had and contributed so much,” according to a post on the Cornell College PAAC Facebook page.

A memorial service was held Monday afternoon for Robinson at a Cornell College chapel, according to the Cornell College Facebook page.
