Libertyville OKs Village's First Historic District

The town's first historic district is made up of 70 buildings and two parks that are mainly along Milwaukee Avenue.

LIBERTYVILLE, IL – An area in downtown Libertyville will now be designated as the Downtown Libertyville Historic District this past week, which will mean new types of regulations will be put in place regarding the exterior of buildings in the district, the Daily Herald reports. The responsibility of enforcing those regulations will now fall on the historic preservation commission. The commission will review any applications for exterior change and provide a recommendation to the village board.

The town's first historic district is made up of 70 buildings and two parks that are mainly along Milwaukee Avenue and runs, generally, from Newberry Avenue to Route 176, according to the newspaper report. Of the buildings in the area, 41 are 100 years or older, 23 were built before 1900, two are designated locally as landmarks and three are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

"It's a different type of regulation --more historic-themed if you will," said Chris Sandine, associate village planner.
