Parents Imprisoned Girl In Basement, Said She Was Possessed: Cops

The father, Randy Swopes, previously pleaded guilty to charges related to sewing his son's buttocks in 2012.

WAUKEGAN, IL — Parents in Lake County are accused of locking their 10-year-old daughter in a basement and forcing her to use a bucket to shower, claiming they believed the girl was possessed by a "demon," police said. Randy Swopes, 48, and Katherine Swopes, 49, of Waukegan are each charged with unlawful restraint and child endangerment. It's not the father's first accusation of child abuse.

In 2012, Randy Swopes accepted a plea deal after he was accused of using a needle and thread to sew his son's buttocks shut.

He was charged with aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery to a child after claiming he had tried to use super glue to close a wound on the child's buttocks, but then used a needle and thread instead, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Randy Swopes pleaded guilty to the aggravated battery charge and was sentenced to community service and two years' probation, which ended in 2014, according to court records.

This week, police responded to the Swopes' Waukegan home after receiving an anonymous call that someone was being held captive in the basement.

The girl, 10, was found living in "poor conditions," police told WGN, and said the girl was forced to use a training toilet and shower using a bucket. She had little contact with other family members, and the parents reportedly told police they believed she was possessed by a demon, authorities said.

The girl and her siblings, ages 7, 13 and 15, were taken into protective custody.

Randy Swopes is currently listed as compliant on the Illinois State Police Murderer and Violent Offender Against Youth Registry. He was required to register after his 2012 guilty plea.

He is being held on $750,000 bond at the Lake County jail, while Katherine Swopes' bond is set at $150,000. Both are due to appear in court July 31.
