Schmitt and Chen Named 2015-16 DAR and SAR Award Winners at Libertyville High School

Libertyville High School is proud to announce the winners of two of its most prestigious student awards.

Libertyville High School is proud to announce the winners of two of its most prestigious awards for the 2015-2016 school year: The Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizens Award and the Sons of the American Revolution Good Citizens Award. LHS faculty members vote for the annual award winners from among the students in the senior class, and this year’s recipients, Amelia Schmitt and Cameron Chen, were the overwhelming winners. Learn more about these outstanding students below:

Amelia Schmitt
Described by a teacher as, “a student you remember for the rest of your career”, Amelia has made an indelible mark on Libertyville High School. She is a superlative leader and role model: President of the Best Buddies Club, President of the Bridge Group, Student Ambassador, WISH Leader, and Link Crew Leader. Amelia was also selected as a student representative serving on the District 128 Board of Education, a prestigious honor to be bestowed upon a student. Despite this myriad of leadership activities, what Amelia is most admired for is her amazing attitude and outstanding character.

Amelia’s school counselor thinks so highly of her that he imagines a future news report naming her as the newest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize or Humanitarian of the Year award. He describes her as a student who is “wonderfully kind and compassionate beyond her years.” Amelia’s Social Studies teacher had this to say about Amelia’s gifts, “Amelia is blessed with natural academic talent, but she never takes the easy way out. She is eager to volunteer and will work with literally anyone in the class. She is the student that often looks around to make sure everyone else is included before she considers who she will work with herself. Her desire to be inclusive is one of her greatest assets.”

Amelia plans to pursue degrees in Special Education and Speech Pathology.

Cameron Chen
Cam’s school counselor said it perfectly: “Every once in a while I get to meet a student who really can do it all: sports, activities, music, tough classes and friend to all.” Cam has been Libertyville High School’s Student Council Executive Board President for the last two years. This position is typically occupied by a senior, but Cam is so respected and liked that he won the election his junior and senior year. Cam plays on the varsity basketball team, is a member of the track and field team, is a Link Crew Leader and a leader of the Athletes Committed to Excellence (ACE) Club. Cam is also an accomplished pianist having played the piano for thirteen years.

Cam’s Social Studies teacher had this to say about him, “Cam is simply a natural born leader. Our entire student body looks up to him. They respect him and listen to what he has to say. Most of that has to do with the fact that Cam is a young man of conviction. I have never known him to do anything but the right thing. He is caring and compassionate, but fearless when it comes to speaking up for what he believes is right.”

Cam plans to study Business or Communications with a minor in Graphic Communications/Graphic Design in pursuit of a career in Social Entrepreneurship.
