State Of Emergency Issued For Libertyville, Grayslake

Both villages have experienced extensive flooding over the past 24 hours.

The villages of Grayslake and Libertyville have declared states of emergency as both towns continue to deal with flooding late Wednesday. In Libertyville, seven inches of rain fell in a 24-hour period with more rain expected tonight, according to village officials.

"We are asking residents to check on neighbors and to contact the village with any concerns over safety and security," according to a news release from the village of Libertyville.

Residents are urged to be especially careful with utilities and flooded basements. In addition, village officials advised Libertyville residents that gas and/or electric could be shut off in certain areas of the community for safety reasons.

Area residents are also urged to be cautious of repairmen who may not be appropriately licensed or uninsured and call the police department to report any suspicious activity.

Residents should also avoid standing in or playing in the floodwaters, which may be unsafe or contaminated.

In Libertyville, sand and/or sandbags are being made available at the following intersections:

  • Sandstone Drive and Hyatt Drive
  • Sandstone Drive and Sandstone Court
  • Riverside Drive and Rockland Road
  • Garfield Avenue and the North Shore Bike Path (just south of Rt 176)

Flooding debris from Libertyville and Grayslake homes should be placed at their curbs. Both villages are making arrangements for a special pick-up. Updates will be posted on the village's websites.

In Libertyville, residents can call 847-362-3434 to report flooding concerns. In Grayslake, residents can call the Village Request for Service System at 847-223-8515. For emergencies call 911.

In addition to the notice above, those currently experiencing flooding should also note the following:

  • Do NOT enter flooded basements.
  • Watch for open manhole covers.
  • Call 800-EDISON-1 to have electric disconnected or to report damaged electric lines.
  • Call North Shore Gas to report emergencies at 866-556-6005.
  • Contact your insurance company to determine coverage and available service.
