The sun is shining and after what seemed to be an exceptionally long winter here in Chicago, everyone is staying outside as long as possible! It is important to keep yourself safe if you are spending time in the sun this summer. Nearly one American dies every hour in the United States due to melanoma, and a substantial number of these cases can be prevented with some sun smarts!
Myth #1: A Suntan is fine - as long as I don't burn. Reality: Any tan indicates damage to your skin. The more exposure you have, your risk of developing skin cancer increases.
Myth #2: I don't need sunscreen in my car. Reality: Your car windows do not filter UVA rays, which actually penetrate deeper in your skin. Tinted windows filter out FOUR TIMES more UVA rays than regular windows. If you do not have tinted windows, have a sunroof or a convertible you should put sunscreen on before getting in the car.
Myth #3: I put sunscreen on this morning, I am fine all day. Reality: You should reapply every few hours. Especially if you are sweating or in the pool.
Myth #4: That old bottle will do just fine. Reality: Sunscreen expires too! If that old bottle gives UVA protection, it breaks down even faster. Do not chance it with an old bottle, and grab a new one from the drug store.
There are enough types of sunscreen to find the one best for you. SPF 30-40 is best, and make sure to reapply. There are also numerous natural brands on the market that have less toxic ingredients in them. Do your research and make sure to get one that is effective and won't break the bank.
Remember to not rely on sunscreen alone. Wrap around sunglasses and hats are another great way to block the sun. There are also companies out there that make clothes and beach attire with UV protection!
