Boy, 2, Found Safe; Police Still Looking For Stolen SUV

Authorities say a 2-year-old boy was in a 2021 Volkswagen Atlas when it was stolen in Libertyville Thursday.

LIBERTYVILLE, IL — A 2-year-old boy who was in a sport utility vehicle when it was stolen Thursday afternoon has been found safe, authorities said.

At about 4 p.m., the Lake County Sheriff's Office issued an alert regarding the 2021 white Volkswagen Atlas, which was stolen from 16085 IL Route 137 in Libertyville. Minutes later, a second update from police was sent to alert the public that the 2-year-old boy who'd been inside the SUV when it was stolen had been found safe in Waukegan.

"We’re transporting him now to be reunited with mother," Lake County Sheriff's Office deputy chief Christopher Covelli told Patch at about 4:30 p.m.

The SUV, which has a license plate number of CS26906, is still missing. The man who stole the SUV with the child inside is described as being tall and thin. He was wearing a gray zip-up hoodie and light green COVID-style mask, according to authorities.

Anyone who spots the vehicle is asked to call 911.
