Town Hall Meetings On Sales Tax Referendum Planned

LIBERTYVILLE, IL — Libertyville voters can learn more about a referendum that will appear on their ballots this March during upcoming town hall meetings in town. The town hall meetings will be at 7 p.m. on Jan. 30 and 7 p.m. on March 4 at the Libertyville Civic Center.

The non-home rule sales tax referendum will appear on the ballot for Libertyville residents voting in the March 17, 2020, primary election.

The referendum question is in regards to imposing a local sales tax, according to a news release from the village. The local sales tax would not apply to medicines, titled goods, such as cars and trailers, and most groceries.

If approved by voters, the additional sales tax is projected to generate approximately $2 million and would take the place of funds lost following the repeal of the Places for Eating tax, according to a news release.

As a non-home rule government, the village is required to obtain voter approval to implement this local sales tax. If approved, an ordinance imposing the tax would be adopted and the sales tax would go into effect on July 1, 2020.

The village requires the revenue from a local sales tax to offset a nearly $2.5 annual capital improvement deficiency for roads, sidewalks, streetlights, parking lots, parks, facilities, and technology, village officials said.
