Wanted Man Leaves Hospital In Just His Hospital Gown: Police

The Round Lake Beach man was also spotted going into an unlocked car in Libertyville to grab a sweater and pants, police said.

LIBERTYVILLE, IL -- A 36-year-old Round Lake Beach man wanted on a warrant left Condell Medical Center in just his hospital gown last month. Matthew D. Brechel, of 521 E. Clarendon Drive, was originally brought to the hospital by the Lake County Sheriff's Office after complaining of chest pain. Police were called back to the hospital, at 801 South Milwaukee Ave., at 5:40 p.m. on Aug. 15 after the man, who was wanted on an active warrant for failure to appear on a retail theft charge, left the medical facility, according to a Libertyville Police Department report.

A witness further reported seeing the man entering a garage in the 100 block of Coolidge Avenue, according to authorities. He was spotted entering an unlocked vehicle where he grabbed a sweater and pants.

And a short time later, police caught up with Brechel at a Shell gas station, 109 S. Milwaukee Avenue, where he was arrested and taken into custody. Brechel was transferred to the Lake County Jail after he was unable to post bond police said.
