Waukegan Woman In 'Grave Condition' After Scooter Crash: Police

The 70-year-old victim sustained critical injures after she fell off the scooter she was riding on and struck her head on a railroad tie.

LIBERTYVILLE, IL – A 70-year-old Waukegan woman sustained serious injuries Wednesday afternoon when she fell off the scooter she was riding, struck her head on a railroad tie and was impaled by a protruding spike in the railroad tie, police said.

The woman was operating a 2009 Motofino scooter at the time of the crash when she drove slightly off the pavement while leaving a parking lot in the 26000 block of North Rt. 83 in unincorporated Mundelein at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department reported.

According to police, officers arrived at the scene to find the woman with critical injuries and are uncertain what caused her to leave the pavement on the scooter. Police said that the railroad tie that the victim struck her head on was being used as a barrier between the grass and the parking lot.

The woman was taken to Advocate Condell Hospital in Libertyville with critical injuries and the woman remains in grave condition, police said in a news release.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and police have no further details at this time.
