Body Pulled From Lake Michigan Was Teen From Aurora

Ivan Echevarria was swept away by a rogue wave at Diversey Harbor in February. A marine unit found his body on Monday.

CHICAGO, IL - The body of an East Aurora High School student who was swept away by a wave on Chicago’s lakefront in February was found this week.

The body of 18-year-old Ivan Echevarria was recovered by members of the Chicago Police Marine Unit at about 7:45 a.m. Monday, according to the Chicago Tribune. The body, which was positively identified as Echevarria on Tuesday, was found in Lake Michigan just blocks from Diversey Harbor, where Echevarria was swept away by a rogue wave while walking with a friend along the lakefront on Feb. 25.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office determined his death was the result of an accidental drowning.

Echevarria was a senior at East Aurora High School and previously attended Simmons Middle School, where he was an honor roll student.

He was the youngest of four siblings.
