Chicago Cookie Factory Likely to See Hundreds of Job Losses
Maker of Oreos and Chips Ahoy could eliminate 300 to 600 jobs at Kedzie Avenue bakery, the largest Mondelez International plant in the U.S.
Once the world’s largest bakery, a factory for treats on the Southwest Side anticipates shutting down nine assembly lines and laying off as many as 600 workers.
Mondelez International, maker of Oreo and Chips Ahoy cookies, says major changes need to take place at the plant. The company is considering whether to add four high-speed lines to the building at 7300 S. Kedzie Ave. or expand in Mexico. If the expansion comes to Chicago, it’s possible only 300 jobs of the 1,200 at the factory will be lost as part of the upgrades, according to Mondelez, formerly known as Kraft Foods.
The factory, once owned by RJ Nabisco, is Mondelez’s largest in the United States.
