Chicago Police Captain Shot During Attempt to Arrest Fugitive

One dead, one in custody after six-hour South Side standoff. Capt. Edward Kulbida in stable condition.

A 58-year-old Chicago Police captain was shot, sustaining injuries to his shoulder and head, during a six-hour standoff in Englewood Tuesday. The standoff in the 7200 block of South Lowe Avenue ended just before midnight, reports the Chicago Tribune, with one person left dead and another taken into custody.

Capt. Edward Kulbida, a highly decorated 30-year veteran who’s served in the 7th District for many years, is in stable condition. Mayor Rahm Emanuel visited with the captain at Stroger Hospital Tuesday night.

Chicago Police were assisting Indianapolis Police and the U.S. Marshals Service in apprehending a fugitive, Daniel P. Brown, wanted in Indiana for three shootings and a carjacking last weekend.

When police went to the apartment building, a gunman, believed to be Brown, opened fire from an apartment window on officers walking toward the front door at about 6 p.m. The captain, hit twice, was pulled into the building by other officers, who radioed for help.

“The most important thing is the captain is OK,” Supt. Garry McCarthy told reporters, adding that he’s in good spirits and surrounded by family. “He (will) have a headache for a while obviously.”
