“We love to create. It’s in our blood”… The local Chicago tech group, MB Labs, has earned its spot in the annual Red Bull Creation: LIVE Build. MB Labs of Chicago, a highly talented and young team with all team members under the age of 32, are known for specializing in both microbiology and chemistry and will compete against five other teams in a live build challenge in Brooklyn, New York from June 12 – 16.
It’s been three years with three variations of the nation’s favorite 72-hour themed innovation competition. Red Bull Creation has returned this year with a new challenge, inspiring technology and a national stage to keep makers, hackers, builders and everyone in between busy thinking of exciting ways to create the future. The local MB Labs will compete in this year’s 72-hour build competition and it will take place in front of a live audience at the 80,000 person Northside Festival, NYC’s largest annual discovery festival.
This eight-day, multi-venue music, technology and entrepreneurship festival will be more inspiring this year with the six teams- including MB labs- of the nation’s top makers, builders and hackers competing while racing against the clock. Starting with the topic announcement on Wednesday, June 12 and the creativity starting Thursday, June 13 during Northside’s tech and innovators showcase, NExT, Red Bull Creation’s pre-qualified teams of four will inspire, plan, produce and ultimately unveil a unique creation while festival goers look-on and interact.

Last year MB Labs created “Morphield,” a soccer like game that moved the field rather than the players. Morphield was made up of 135 individually activated balloons, lots of code and wii controls. It could be played as a game or displayed as kinetic art. This year MB Labs’ qualification creation was “Persistence,” a six-foot long robotic arm that utilized ultraviolet LED’s to draw on a phosphorous canvas. Basically any drawing could be designed on paper and then the robotic arm would create the drawing in ultraviolet lights.
MB Labs will rise to the challenge this week in Brooklyn and impress viewers with their innovative thinking and represent Chicago.
