House of Good Shepherd Addresses Needs of Domestic Violence Victims

For over 153 years the House of the Good Shepherd has been a safe haven for women and children facing hardship.  In 1980, they launched their domestic violence program designed to help women and children re-tool their lives so they can reach their full potential and lead meaningful lives with dignity.

Their program is funded by generous individuals, corporate grants and foundations and the money raised at the very posh Women's Board Brunch and Auction. This year is the 106th annual event and is sure to be a winner.

HGS provided residential and non-residential services to 480 women and their children last year alone.  The HGS Learning Center provides classes focused on fundamental education, computer skills and employment readiness training.  Women can also learn about financial literacy through budgeting and money management classes. There are classes and coaching for better positive parenting, overcoming substance abuse and how to incorporate overall “wellness” into their everyday life.  The HGS program is designed to provide women with a chance at a brighter future where fear doesn’t dictate their every move.

The holiday season can be merry and bright for many but also a time when family stress increases.  Sometimes that stress turns into domestic violence and for women and children, the typical victims,  it can be a nightmare.  HGS continues its efforts to break that cycle freeing up today’s victims but also with the hope of preventing future generations from the same violent behaviors.

This weekend’s Women's Board Brunch and Auction hopes to raise over $300,000 to fund their important programs.  To learn more, visit their website at www.hgschicago.com .
