ICECF Partners with Chicago Park District to Launch POWER UP! Boot Camp

The Illinois Currency Exchange Charitable Foundation (ICECF) in partnership with the Chicago Park District launched the inaugural POWER UP! Boot Camp, A Healthy Minds/Healthy Bodies Program. Developed with fitness expert Andrea Metcalf, ICECF’s POWER UP! Boot Camp initiative will teach children about the importance of exercise, diet and nutrition.

 

Lead by Metcalf, the POWER UP! Boot Camp will take place on August 23, September 13 and 14, 2014 at Washington Park (5531 S. King Dr.) and the Broadway Park Armory (5917 N. Broadway). The first date will bring together 200 10th-12th graders who will learn all the elements of the program. From that group a select number will be chosen to serve as Mentors on the later two dates. The Mentors, under the supervision of Metcalf and Chicago Park District Wellness team, will work with 250 4th-6th graders on both September 13 & 14 will take them through a series of 45 minute sessions designed to get the kids active as well as impart valuable knowledge on the importance of ongoing exercise as well as healthy eating impacts their performance both in and out of the classroom.

The Mentors as well as the younger children will participate in activities such as fitness boot camp, yoga, interactive cardio classes, nutrition/ physical activity games and races. The sessions on nutrition will cover a myriad of topics including, how to read food package labels, what are good energy foods, how to make smart food choices when eating at a restaurant and shopping, what constitutes a well-balanced meal, how to prepare a quick healthy snack and what you put in your body effects how you perform. Attendees will also be taught lessons on self-awareness, self-control and self-esteem within the context of the program.
