Lincoln Park Tutors Honored for Work with Adult Learners

Lincoln Park tutors honored at the 25th Annual On the Road to Literacy Conference

Alison Hunt and Rebecca Sharp, tutors for the Anixter Center Jack Ehrlich Literacy Program located at 2001 N. Clyborn Ave. in Chicago, were honored with an Outstanding Tutor award on April 9, 2016 at the 25th Annual On the Road to Literacy Conference. The awards were made by Literacy Volunteers of Illinois and the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Center for Literacy.

In nominating Alison for the award, Lesley Kartali of the Anixter Center said, “Alison is a great example of an inspiring tutor and we are so pleased to have her as part of our community.” Alison works with a very low level learner, but has taken the challenge in stride. In her 35 hours of tutoring this past year, she’s incorporated many different tools and resources to find what will most effectively benefit her student. Alison’s patience, understanding, and willingness to go above and beyond her program duties have made her an exemplary tutor.

In nominating Rebecca, Kartali said, “Becky has gone above and beyond, but what makes her most effective is her sensitivity to her learner.” Working with a level 0 learner can be a challenge, but Rebecca’s patience and flexibility have made a real difference in boosting her learner’s confidence, ability, and enjoyment of learning. She has volunteered for 33 hours in 2015, always making sure to mold her lessons to her learner’s interests and moods. Rebecca is truly a model of an excellent tutor.
