Lincoln Park Zoo's Cute Newborn Monkey Will Give You An Orange Crush

CHICAGO, IL — The Lincoln Park Zoo welcomed an orange addition this week when the Helen Brach Primate House's breeding pair of endangered Francois' langur monkeys became new parents.
The bronze-furred infant was born Monday, Feb. 6, and joins parents Pumpkin and Cartman, as well as sisters Kieu and Orla, and brothers Vinh and Pierre. Zoo officials haven't been able to determine the newborn's sex and measurements yet because the infant is still clinging tightly to mom.
“Pumpkin is an experienced and attentive mother, and the entire troop is being supportive,” said Maureen Leahy, the zoo's curator of primates. “We recently updated the langur exhibit to include more dynamic elements such as vines, sway poles and pulley feeders, so it will be exciting to see the newest addition of the troop grow more independent and explore the habitat.”

Francois’ langurs are native to southern China, northern Vietnam and west-central Laos, and hunting along with a shrinking habitat have endangered the species. Although adults sport black head crests and body coloration with white ear-to-ear markings, newborns are born with bright orange fur that changes to black after three to six months.
