Man Tried To Suffocate Woman In Lincoln Park: Prosecutors

A man was denied bond Sunday. He faces several charges, including attempted murder.

CHICAGO, IL — A man was denied bond Sunday after he was charged with trying to suffocate a woman in the city's Lincoln Park neighborhood. Derek Larbie, 20, faces several charges, including attempted murder. Prosecutors said he broke into the woman's apartment in the 2200 block of North Racine in July after spending the night with her.

Larbie was arrested in Pennsylvania on unrelated charges before he was extradited to Chicago, and arrested at O'Hare International Airport Dec. 15.

Prosecutors said the woman, 22, met Larbie outside a bar in July, and they went to a nightclub. The woman was heavily intoxicated, according to prosecutors, and got a ride with Larbie and others back to her apartment.

The victim's roommate then gave Larbie and his friend a ride to a CTA Red Line Station, prosecutors said. The Chicago Sun-Times reported that surveillance images showed Larbie and his friend never boarded the train, and instead used a ride-share service to return to the woman's apartment. The woman awoke to find Larbie in her bed the next morning, and she and her roommate eventually kicked him out, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said Larbie returned to the woman's apartment the next morning and allegedly tried to smother her. It was unclear how he got in. The Sun-Times reported that a surveillance camera recorded Larbie returning five days later with a masked man, and leaving after turning the camera around.
