Motorcyclist Charged in Fatal Lake Shore Drive Crash

Police say man was speeding when he ran a red light and hit two pedestrians, killing a 25-year-old woman.

Charges were filed against a Lakeview man accused of striking two pedestrians while driving a motorcycle, killing one and seriously injuring the other, police said.

Charles Lyons, 20, of the 800 block of West George Street, is charged with reckless homicide with a motor vehicle, and aggravated reckless driving causing bodily harm, both felonies. He was also cited for traffic violations.

Around 10:25 p.m., Oct. 19, police said Lyons ran a red light while driving a motorcycle in the 600 block of Lake Shore Drive, when he hit two pedestrians in the crosswalk at Balbo and Lake Shore Drive. Police said that Lyons was speeding.

A 25-year-old woman was transported to Northwestern Hospital in critical condition and died of her injuries. The second pedestrian, a 40-year-old man, was transported to Stroger in serious condition where he was treated for his injuries.

Lyons also sustained injuries in the crash and was taken to Northwestern Hospital, where he was later charged, police said.

The Lakeview man is due in bond court at the Leighton Criminal Courts Building at 26th and California on Saturday.
