The Palmer House Hilton Marks the 81st Anniversary of the End of Prohibition with Two New Throw Back Cocktails and Dishes

Recalling the Age of the Speakeasy, Al Capone and One of the Darkest Times in America’s History, the Palmer House introduces White Lightnin’ Sweet Tea and the Bathtub Gin Cranberry Rickey

CHICAGO –The Palmer House Hilton, 17 E. Monroe, celebrates the 81st anniversary of the end of Prohibition with new cocktails and food items available at Lockwood Bar and Potter’s. The end of Prohibition was brought about with the ratification of the 21st Amendment, repealing the 18th Amendment in December 1933.

The Palmer House honors this auspicious anniversary in America’s mixology history with two new drinks and food items that hark back to those days before the end of Prohibition when drinking was banned; speakeasies flourished and jazz had the world dancing. The White Lightnin’ Sweet Tea and the Bathtub Gin Cranberry Rickey, both $13.50. The White Lightnin’ Sweet Tea, served in a mason jar, combines Ole Smoky White Lightnin’ Moonshine, sweet tea, rooftop honey (from the Palmer House’s roof top beehives), fresh lemon juice and mint. The Bathtub Gin Cranberry Rickey mixes Plymouth Gin, lemon juice, cranberry juice, tonic and served with lime zest, cranberries and a sprig of time. Two new items on the menu include Deviled Duck Eggs; $12, duck eggs, espelette pepper, smoked trout roe and a rye wafer and Lobster Salad, lobster tossed with Meyer lemon and celery and served with a toasted brioche, $18.

“The Palmer House is one of the few places in Chicago that can claim to celebrate the end of Prohibition twice. The Palmer House celebrated the ratification of the 21st Amendment in 1933 where many Chicagoans crowded its bars to raise a glass to the end of banned drinking and we look forward to celebrating its anniversary again with these throwback drinks,” said Palmer House Historian Ken Price.
