McCarthy, 27, described the three to ABC 7 as “jovial” when they approached him and his girlfriend. McCarthy, a former member of the Royal Air Force, handed over his wallet and cell phone.
When the three allegedly began shaking down his girlfriend, Carisa Lerner, McCarthy tried to disarm Mondragon. Police said that Mondragon stabbed McCarthy.
The three men fled the scene. ABC 7 Chicago reported that Salgado-Camargo returned to the scene and the former RAF member tackled him and held Salgado-Camargo until police arrived, according to the charges.
McCarthy was transported to Northwestern Hospital for treatment and was listed in stable condition.
Mondragon and Salgado-Camargo are both scheduled for a bond hearing on Monday. A third offender remains at large, police said.
