Off-Duty Sheriff's Officer Exchanges Gunfire With Robbery Suspects In Roscoe Village

Surveillance video captures shoot-out in Roscoe Village alley, WGN Channel 9 News reports.

A pair of robbers appear to have picked the wrong person to rob when an off-duty Cook County Sheriff’s officer exchanged gunfire with them in an alley in Roscoe Village, WGN Channel 9 News reported.

The sheriff’s officer was leaving a poker game in a private home around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday at Belmont and Wolcott when he was approached from behind by two masked men.

The suspects announced a robbery, taking an unknown amount of cash and the sheriff’s officer’s cell phone. One of the suspects opened fire at at off-duty cop who fired back using his service weapon, Officer Bari Lemmon of Police News Affairs said.

About six gunshots in all were exchanged, including one bullet that pierced a window at Jahn Elementary School. It is not known if the sheriff’s officer wounded one of the suspects, WGN said.

The sheriff’s officer was not injured.

A security camera from a business about a half block away caught the exchange of gunfire.
