FBI Joins Chicago Police In Going After Violent Gang Members

Chicago police, federal agents and Illinois State Troopers will be assigned to surge teams in Chicago's most violent neighborhoods.

The FBI confirmed that it would be sending 65 agents to assist the Chicago Police Department in helping to curb gang violence in city streets.

Chicago Sun-Times columnist Michael Sneed was the first to break the feds’ plan. The FBI will be involved in gang missions on Thursdays and Fridays at least for the next several weeks.

The federal agents already assigned to the Chicago office’s Violent Crimes Task Force, will be involved in developing street intelligence and conducting surveillance on gang drug dealers, Sneed reported.

The announcement comes on the heels of Gov. Pat Quinn’s deployment of 40 Illinois State Police to work on surge teams with Chicago police officers in tracking down the “worst of the worst” violent criminals wanted by law enforcement, the governor’s office detailed in a press release.

The surge teams -- comprised of Chicago police, state troopers and federal agents -- will be focusing on concentrated areas on the city’s West and South Sides.
