Local Mayors Go into Panic Mode over Rauner Budget

Gov. Bruce Rauner warned of shared sacrifice; now local mayors are screaming NIMBY.

It didn’t take long for local government officials to start freaking out over Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposed budget cuts, which slashes in half the share of state income taxes municipalities receive from Springfield.

For those who have worked in local governments or dealt with them, you’re probably aware of the acronym, NIMBY, short for Not In My Backyard. But in this case, Not In My Budget Yard seems to best suit the sentiment local officials feel towards Rauner’s proposals.

While Rauner has targeted local governments’ budgets for some heavy trimming, there are several ironies about the governor’s turnaround plan.
