Not Your Mother’s Menopause

On May 13, a group of Chicago area women met at Uncommon Ground’s Andersonville location for an evening of food, wine and conversation about well-women care, healthy living and treatment options for menopause.

Amy Graf, a certified nurse-midwife and director of nurse midwifery with Swedish Covenant Medical Group, along with Dr. Gina Sirchio, a chiropractor and certified nutritionist at LG Institute for Health, led the women through a discussion of a variety of health topics. These included: menopause symptoms and treatments; proper nutrition; the importance of exercise; acupuncture and other natural treatment options; and, ways to improve bone strength. Women were also asked to access their creative sides and draw a picture of the female anatomy.

“Women experience menopause differently; the treatments that work for one woman may not work for another,” says Graf. “At Swedish Covenant Hospital, our midwifery group offers a range of natural treatments, as well as routine medications, that may help women reduce or eliminate menopause symptoms so that they can find the option that works best for them.  We also refer heavily to complementary providers so our women can know the benefits of acupuncture, chiropractic care and physical therapy.”
