Pepper Spray in Classroom Sends 12 Eighth Graders to Hospital

A student inadvertently set off a can of pepper spray at Budlong Elementary School in Lincoln Square Thursday afternoon.

CHICAGO, IL - Twelve eighth graders at a grade school in Lincoln Square were taken to North Side hospitals Thursday afternoon after a can of pepper spray went off accidentally in a classroom.

The incident occurred just after 1 p.m. at Lyman A. Budlong Elementary at 2701 W. Foster Ave., according to DNAinfo Chicago.

One eighth grader at the school told DNA that a friend of his was reaching into his bookbag and inadvertently set off a pepper spray device on his sister’s keychain. The pepper spray went off in a classroom, injuring a dozen.

Some were taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital, which is right down the street from the school.
