Students at St Philip Lutheran, 2500 W. Bryn Mawr, Chicago, started the
New Year with a bang participating in its second annual Winterim from January
8-13, 2014. Similar to an experience offered in college, Winterim gave students
the opportunity to study a single topic in-depth and in many instances without
classroom walls. Teachers shared their expertise, while using Chicago as their
laboratory. Choosing a single
topic of interest, students dove into the theme Arts, Actors, and Authors. This year’s Winterim, began before the
Christmas break with an all school trip to The Goodman Theater to see A
Christmas Carol. After this,
students split into their self-selected areas of study. Some students chose to explore
photography while others learned about American musicals or silent films. Still
other children chose to explore the culinary arts with a cooking session, and
many others found their voice during a session on music. It was quite a sight
to see children diligently engaged in learning experiences that incorporated
traditional school subjects like, reading, writing, and math in a powerful and
engaging way. Principal
Charles Asche, formerly an administrator and teacher at St Martini Lutheran
(Milwaukee) and Roycemore (Evanston) schools, continues to make Winterim an
annual event.
St Philip educates children from preschool through eighth grade. The staff will host an Open House for
prospective students and their families on February 23, 2014 from
12pm-3pm. For more information
