6 Best Options for Off Season Basketball

Off season youth basketball activities to help players achieve their goals without breaking the bank.

No doubt you've heard it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become a master of something. After spending the last eight months playing on a team, most players probably feel as though 10,000 hours is closer than they think. Here are six of our best options for off season activities to get you closer to your goals without breaking the bank...

1) 3 on 3 Tournaments

Confidence comes with repetition, being able to make decisions and execute. What better way to touch the ball more times and test your decision making without the risk of substitution? Many coaches and trainers believe that fewer players and extra space to try new things actually improves your game and enhances the fun. At only $20 per player, 3-4 players per team, and a few hours on Saturday, August 20th, 3v3 Summer Hoops is worth your time.

2) Open Gym

Back in the day, open gym was the local playground, self-refereed (or more so the older kids called the shots), and you played ball. But we're in the 21st century now and open gym is din-rated courts and air conditioning. At $5 per player, and a court open all summer, Open Gym is an excellent choice, with or without teammates (sorry folks, no coaches allowed unless they're playing adult open gym).

3) Gym Membership

Athletes these days can no longer rely on playing alone to increase muscle and endurance. Memberships allow use of fitness areas and/or courts to add lean muscle and improve your game on your schedule, without a time limit. For players ages 13-17, a Youth Courts+ Membership is the best option. At $32.95 (Summer pricing for August & September), you have the privilege of using both the courts and the fitness areas. Fitness only is $23.95.

4) Fall League

There's no doubt the benefits of fall league include a shorter season at a smaller price (benefit #1). It also comes with less pressure to win and the opportunity to reconnect with the basketball before pressure-packed try-outs and the regular season sneaks up on you (benefit #2 & 3). In its 8th season, having hosted over 10 different conferences, and priced at only $580 per team, Walker Athletics NIBL Fall League is the best choice for preseason team prep.

5. Training

Even the best players need a trainer, whether for strength and explosion or specific sports skills. But buyer beware! Everyone seems to be a "guru" in today's training world. Choose a trainer with certifications and experience that fits your personality, needs and budget. We suggest FAST Academy for your physical training and DBLP Training for basketball skill-specific needs. Prices and requirements vary.

6. Court Rental

Tried and true team practices on din-rated courts in air conditioning. Typically, teams use a full court but in the off season, when the full team may not be available, ask for a half court rental to work with the players that are not active in other sports. Pricing discounts are available at Walker Athletics through October, including teams that have joined our Fall League and would like additional practice. Off season keeps the player in touch with the game at a manageable price. Choose reputable organizations, remember it’s about enjoying the game, and feel free to contact Walker Athletics for answers to questions you may encounter.
