DuPage County Getting Its Own ReStore

Home improvement shoppers can find a bargain, help the environment and give back to the community when DuPage Habitat for Humanity opens its first ReStore in Addison Saturday, July 23.

ReStore accepts donated new and gently used household and construction materials from the public, retailers, manufacturers, distributors and contractors, and then sells them at greatly reduced prices.  All profits from ReStore sales fund the DuPage Habitiat mission to build affordable housing throughout DuPage County.

“ReStore’s goal is to reuse, recycle and repurpose,” said Jim Fessler, manager of the DuPage Habitat for Humanity ReStore.  “We offer shoppers a chance to find hidden treasures to use in their home renovation projects.  In addition to getting a great bargain, they help the environment by repurposing household items and construction materials that would otherwise be thrown out and end up in a landfill.”

Every year Illinois landfills accumulate over 15 million tons of waste, which is then replaced by new products.  Habitat for Humanity estimates that one ReStore is capable of collecting, selling, and respectively diverting anywhere from 30 to 220 tons of material from landfills annually.
Items found in the store typically include appliances, cabinets, countertops, doors, electrical supplies, plumbing, lumber (6’ or longer), hardware, tools, lighting and wooden furniture.

The grand opening of the Addison ReStore will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 23.  Activities include:
•       A ribbon cutting with Addison public officials, Habitat homeowners, and other Friends of Habitat at 10 a.m.
•       Mosaic tile demonstrations by Linda DiStefano of Century Tile at 11:30 a.m.

The ReStore is located at 869 South Rohlwing Road in Addison, just two blocks north of North Ave. and Route 53.  Hours of operation are Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Donations are accepted Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

ReStore donations can be dropped off at the Addison location by appointment only. DupPage Habitat for Humanity offers a pick-up service for large donations – please contact Jim Fessler at 630-510-3737 to set up an appointment. In addition to helping to reuse and recycle, donations of materials and equipment are tax deductible.
