Catch Schiesher Student Art at Chicago Botanic Garden

Last year, when Schiesher third grade students made paper from pulp and recycled papers, we had no idea we would be included in an international exhibit!

The Treewhispers exhibit at the Chicago Botanic Garden is made up of paper “tree rings” from artists and children all over the world. Our third graders are a part of this group!

Funds from our LEHSO and Artsonia paid for the materials and guest artist and leader Cheryl Mahowald, who is a local artist and founder of the DuPage Book and Paper Arts Guild.  

Third graders made two kinds of paper. They made cotton pulp paper rectangles for book covers. These little books were used for their notes and observations when they went to Fullersburg Woods.  They made circles from recycled paper and pulp to represent tree rings. The students decorated these “tree rings” with their images and thoughts about trees. We strung them together and displayed them in our library at the end of last year.

 Pamel Paulsrud, the artist who began this project, invited us to send our tree rings to her. She liked them so much she has put them in the exhibit.
