Please join us for our discussion of In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror, and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin by Erik Larson. In 1933, William Dodd was a history professor at the University of Chicago. While he longed to continue his research into the history of the Old South, President Roosevelt selected him to be the ambassador to Germany. Pulling up his stakes, Dodd brought his wife, son and daughter with him to Berlin, where Hitler and the Nazi Party had recently gained control of the government. Larson is a master storyteller, and this book is no exception, giving the reader the account of the experiences and evolving attitudes of the Dodd family during Hitler’s critical first year in power.
