Former Naperville Central star to lead Benedictine men's volleyball program

Benedictine University has announced the appointment of Dan Buehring as the first ever head men’s volleyball coach.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dan to the staff,” said Mark McHorney, Benedictine University director of athletics. “Dan will bring a great deal of knowledge and energy to the program and will have the opportunity to establish the culture of men’s volleyball at Benedictine.”

Buehring arrives at Benedictine following two seasons as an assistant for the Loyola University Chicago women’s volleyball team. During his first year as an assistant, Loyola posted the largest one year win improvement in the NCAA for 2012 by improving 13 victories from 2011.

The California Baptist University graduate, who was a setter during his playing days in college and at Naperville Central High School, assisted in the offensive systems, scouting, and practice planning while also coordinating recruiting and training the setters during his tenure. Loyola moved into a new conference in 2013, transitioning to a member of the Missouri Valley Conference.

“It is an honor to have this opportunity to start Benedictine University's men's volleyball program from the ground up,” Buehring said. “I want to thank Mark McHorney and the leadership at Benedictine as I could not be more excited to start this next chapter at Benedictine.

"I look forward to this exciting challenge and think it will be great for Benedictine University, the athletic department and the young men who join our program. Being right in the middle of one of the nation's best prep bases, along with a great education, first-class facilities and support, I think we can accomplish a lot of great things in the coming years.”

Prior to joining Loyola, Buehring was a three-year member of the staff at the University of Illinois-Chicago. An active volleyball player, Buehring owns 24 beach volleyball tournament wins.

Buehring graduated from Cal Baptist with a degree in business administration after winning a pair of NAIA national championships. He earned a master's degree from UIC in 2011. Benedictine will begin competing in men’s volleyball in 2015 as an independent.
