Man Who Shot Woman In Yorktown Mall Parking Lot Gets 18 Years

LOMBARD, IL — A Kentucky man was sentenced to 18 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to aggravated battery with a firearm in connection with a shooting that injured a woman at Yorktown Mall in 2022.

Ronald Grundy, 26, of Kentucky, has been held in DuPage County Jail since Nov. 14, 2022. His co-defendant, Jakobi Kinsey 27, has been charged with aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection with the incident. His case is pending.

Police were called to the Yorktown Mall around 3 p.m. on Nov. 11, 2022, for a report that shots had been fired in the vicinity of the parking lot by JC Penney.

When police got to the scene, a woman and two men told them Grundy, wearing a ski mask, and Kinsey had approached them while they were inside the mall. Prosecutors say one of the defendants asked, "You good?" during the interaction.

The group exited the mall and went to their car a short time after. According to prosecutors, Kinsey and Grundy got into their car when they spotted the victims' vehicle and drove toward them.

Grundy is accused of leaning out of the car's passenger side and firing multiple shots, one of which hit the woman in her arm.

Grundy and Kinsey are accused of then fleeing the scene. The woman was taken to a local hospital, where the bullet was removed via surgery.

Following the shooting, police recovered five spent 9mm casings at the scene.

After an investigation by Lombard police, Kinsey was arrested in Chicago on Nov. 12. Grundy was arrested on Nov. 14 in Cook County.

“At the onset of the busy shopping season during a three-day holiday weekend, Mr. Grundy opened fire in the middle of the afternoon in the parking lot of a popular mall,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release.

Berlin added, “The complete disregard for human life and the rule of law Mr. Grundy exhibited that day is almost unimaginable. In DuPage County, law enforcement’s commitment to public safety is resolute and we will stop at nothing to protect our residents, businesses and visitors and bring anyone who commits this type of violent behavior to justice."

Grundy is required to serve 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole. Kinsey is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 1.
