Midwestern University Student Wins Soroptimist Grant

Lauren Feldshau, Midwestern University, is the recipient of the 2015 Virginia M. Wagner Educational Grant given by Soroptimist International

Lauren Feldshau, currently of Naperville, IL, is the winner of this year’s Virginia M. Wagner Educational Grant. Soroptimist International of Suburban Chicago honors Lauren for her efforts in pursuit of a Doctorate of Physical Therapy.

Lauren’s interest in physical therapy began while recovering from an ankle injury incurred during gymnastics. She had thought about a career in medicine, but her own experience put a new slant on physical therapy. She had thought about a career that incorporated her passion for teaching with her desire to help others, allowed for personal connection with the patients and provided opportunities to use creativity and problem solving skills on a daily basis. Physical therapy had all of the aspects that she wanted in her chosen career.

Ms. Feldshau volunteered at the Methodist Medical Center as an aide in the rehabilitation center. She volunteered, coached gymnastics for children and took dual credit courses to get a head start on her bachelor degree. She worked hard to maintain her GPA and found that working with children itself was educational, demanding and rewarding. This influenced her decision to continue working with children and pursue a career in pediatric physical therapy. Her position as a Physical Therapy Technician at Accelerated Rehabilitation Center afforded some one-on-one experience which taught her that it is more than working with the physical impairment. It is the personal connection with the patient that forms the foundation on which trust can be established.
