Representative Ron Sandack Responds to Failed Democrat Attempt to Override of SB 1229

Governor Rauner's veto stands.

Today in Springfield, House Democrats came up three votes short in an attempt to override a union arbitration bill that was vetoed by Governor Bruce Rauner. In response to the unsuccessful override attempt of SB 1229, State Representative Ron Sandack (R-Downers Grove) has issued the following statement:

“The best negotiations occur when labor and management have a starting point and work their way to an agreement that falls somewhere in the middle. That system was preserved today thanks to the 43 Representatives who took a vote that derailed Speaker Madigan’s attempt to undermine Illinois’ collective bargaining process.”

“Had this override attempt been successful today, state contract negotiations could have unilaterally been handed off to a mediator who would choose one proposal or the other with no opportunity for a compromise. The results on future budgets could have been catastrophic. Thankfully, common sense prevailed and the elected representatives from both sides of the AFSCME negotiations can now return to the bargaining table and work toward a fair agreement.”
